Ghosts and Gravestones

As we toured in a bus all around Savannah, the driver went so fast that we couldn't take pictures. But we noticed that they had a tour at night called Ghosts and Gravestones scare you. I can tell you, it is not worth the money if you want to get scared, but you do hear a lot of history and folklore. Our tour guide was dressed in costume but was so dark, I couldn't get a good picture. As we went around the city, she told stories of haunting's throughout Savannah. There are 90 known haunting's in homes and businesses and were featured on the SCI-FI channel on Ghost Hunters ( I don't watch it) and it is the most haunted city in the U.S. But after hearing everything that we were told, I would like to check out the history part of it. It was very interesting in how people's thought process worked in the 1700's.

They took us through the Sorell home where Molly; the woman of the house caught her husband with the hired slave and jumped from the third story building killing herself. On Ghost Hunters, they taped sounds that came from the carriage house that was were Molly caught her husband in the act. I have added the house pictures and the pretty furniture throughout the house, most of it is still original. It was so neat to see and feel as though you lived in that era.

They also took us to the graveyard and we learned that people died before they were born, or that they lived over 170 years, or that men were women; they were saying that a lot of stones were misprinted with wrong dates, it was all quite funny. People were buried on top of each other as much as 27 family members could be buried together. Once the city was built and then had the big fire that destroyed lots of homes, they forgot where most of the burial grounds were. When they started building homes and businesses, they would begin to dig and find buried treasure; meaning bodies, and they just built on top of the burial sites. Some of the homes that you will see below are some of those homes. We had a lot of fun in spite of not seeing any ghosts.

Another part of the graveyard...but I bet you didn't know about the Spanish moss hanging from the tree....it was from a curse supposedly from a woman who was hanged on the square....the moss has chiggers that live in them....people used to stuff their mattresses with them to make them softer.....thus the saying....."don't let the bed bugs bite".....the things you learn on tours.....We were strictly forbidden to touch it....after hearing that, who would!!!
